Standard switch buying guide

What does 'gang' mean on a light switch?

A gang is the number of individual switches on one plate — a 1-gang controls one light or circuit, while a 3-gang controls three from a single faceplate.

What is the difference between 1-way and 2-way?

A 1-way switch controls a light from a single point. A 2-way switch lets you control the same light from two places, such as the top and bottom of a staircase.

Which finish should I choose?

Finish is mostly aesthetic — antique and satin brass suit period rooms, while matt black and stainless steel work in modern schemes. Keep one finish across a room for a coordinated look.

Will these fit my existing back boxes?

Most plates follow standard UK sizing, but always check the gang count and box depth against your wall box before ordering.

All electrical installation should be carried out by a qualified electrician in line with UK wiring regulations (BS 7671). Free UK delivery on orders over £100.
