Door hinge buying guide

What size hinge do I need?

Most internal doors use 3-inch (76mm) hinges, while heavier or external doors use 4-inch (102mm). As a rule, fit a pair for a standard internal door and three hinges for heavier or fire doors.

Butt or ball-bearing hinges?

Plain butt hinges suit lighter internal doors, while ball-bearing hinges run smoothly under heavier or high-use doors and are usually specified for fire-rated openings.

What do the CE grades mean?

Hinges are CE/UKCA graded by duty — higher grades such as Grade 11 and 13 carry heavier doors and more frequent use. Match the grade to your door weight and traffic.

Which finish and material?

Stainless steel resists corrosion for external and bathroom doors, while brass and plated finishes coordinate with your handles indoors.
