Utility fittings buying guide
What is a cooker control unit?
A cooker control unit combines a high-current switch for an electric cooker or oven, sometimes with an additional 13A socket, on a single plate.
What does an RCD do?
An RCD (residual current device) quickly cuts the power if it detects a fault or leakage current, adding protection against electric shock.
What is a connection unit?
A connection unit provides a fixed, tidy point to wire in an appliance, either switched or unswitched depending on whether local isolation is needed.
Where are these used?
Utility fittings suit kitchens, garages and outbuildings. Higher-current items such as cooker switches must be sized and installed to UK wiring regulations.
All electrical installation should be carried out by a qualified electrician in line with UK wiring regulations (BS 7671). Free UK delivery on orders over £100.
