Mortice Latches

Mortice latches are essential pieces of ironmongery that you will see on almost every internal door. Their job is simple – to keep a door closed and secure in its frame. A latch slots into the ‘keep’ on the door frame and is released when door knobs or door handles are turned.

When it comes to choosing the correct mortice latches you need to consider size and finish carefully. Door handles on rose or backplate are most commonly fitted to 63 or 75mm deep latch cases. These latches usually have a backset (the distance to the operating point) of 44 or 57mm. Door knobs require a longer reach because when you turn a door knob your knuckles need room to move, otherwise they will scrape against the door frame. Because of this door knobs are usually fitted to latch cases of 100, 125 or 150mm with backsets of 80, 100 or 125mm.

Here at Love Handles we have a quality range of mortice latches from the likes of Easi-T, Eurospec, Zoo Hardware and Carlisle Brass. Prices start at under a pound, which is a great deal for quality latches made by some of the best manufacturers in the ironmongery industry.
